5PM Presentation :
-----------------
Developed by Advanced Software Concepts, 5PM is a communications package fully
compatible with Apple's Communications Toolbox (i.e. using connection, terminal,
and file transfer tools). 5PM allows simultaneous sessions to different hosts systems.
In addition to standard terminal emulation, 5PM contains four major aspects :
• Scripting langage (HyperTalk compatible with support for most XCMD and XFCN)
• User-configurable palettes:
create your own working tools in the shape of buttons or other graphic
objects, with fully mouse-activated powerful scripts.
These features (read/write to the terminal stream, search for specific
character strings, and more) are available in any of the workmodes.
• Vamping or Front-Ending tools (i.e. give a host application a Mac
interface without altering the Host application itself), see the IBM filing
system as the Finder would show it, without changing the host system
software; "re-vamp" your existing mainframe applications without changing
the existing code; cheaper, safer, faster…
• Esmeralda : an implementation of the Apple Terminal Services® protocol,
in a superset of MacWorkStation, a collaborative processing architecture
where the graphic user interface is fully mainframe driven.
The host application (written in any language capable of writing to a
terminal console) sends character string commands which cause the Macintosh
to display graphic objects (windows, dialogs, controls, text edit items) to
handle both data display and input, with the possibility of handling many
input control functions locally, thus relieving the mainframe application and
reducing network load.
The addition of all these features allows the 5PM application to swap
transparently and automatically from terminal emulation, to vamping or
MacWorkStation mode, depending on the data exchanged between the
Host and 5PM. It is a powerful environment to use existing mainframe
applications without loosing the comfort of the Macintosh GUI.
